Homemade Lotion

Our whole family uses this lotion, even the men! We use it on our hands and lips. At Christmas time, we give it away as gifts. I have found round metal containers for storing it at the dollar store or Hobby Lobby. We also recycle small glass jars to store it. We use this beeswax -Yellow Natural Beeswax Pellets - CARGEN- from Amazon.

Equipment

  • Kitchen scale
  • Hand Mixer
  • Glass bowl dedicated for lotion (one that will fit on a saucepan snugly and allow you to stir)

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • ½ cup carrier oil (olive oil, almond oil, etc)
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 2 oz beeswax pellets
  • 4 tsp shea butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract OR 20-30 drops of essential oil like lavender (Feel free to experiment with your favorite natural scents.)

Instructions

Instructions

  • Place carrier oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter in a glass bowl. Fill the saucepan with enough water to barely touch the bottom of the bowl when it is placed on top. (You are essentially making a double boiler.)
  • Over medium heat periodically stir the ingredients until melted and you do not see any beeswax pellets.
  • Remove from heat and add the desired fragrance.
  • Place in the refrigerator until slightly hardened.
  • If you desire smooth lotion, this step is necessary. Carefully mix with hand mixer until smooth.
  • Transfer to containers.

Notes

If you are making it for gifts, double the recipe. Typically, if I am going through the effort of making it, I usually double it. If it is too much, you can store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
