What gifts do you recall the most?
When I think of gifts, I often think of the compost bin my son built for me out of palettes or the pantry shelves my husband put in the basement of our previous, beloved 800 square foot home.
Obviously, my love language is not “gifts”, but I think many times gifts have more meaning when they come from our own hands.
One caveat, if time is limited, making gifts may stress you out. You need to assess your individual needs.
However, if you schedule time now, you can “kill two birds with one stone”: have quality time with your children making gifts and have meaningful gifts for the holidays.
Here are some of my ideas for homemade holiday gifts, but options are endless.
Homemade Washer Necklaces
Last year I found the idea to make washer necklaces here. You can use nail polish, but the smell can be overwhelming. We ended up using acrylic paint from Hobby Lobby. We also wanted them to look more sophisticated so we added the beads.
My other advice is if you are using old washers first spray the backs with silver spray paint. I also ended up spraying them with a sealer coat like modge podge.
Homemade Body Products
Lotion We also give this lotion out as gifts every year. It makes a wonderful present for teachers. I can usually find the metal containers at the dollar store. You can also recycle small lotions or make up containers that are empty. Wrap in cellophane and tie with twine or ribbon. Add a label (lavender or vanilla). Because stove use is involved, this is better for older children. Here are the links to ingredients needed. Beeswax, Shea butter, Coconut oil
Sugar scrub makes an easy and economical gift. No cooking involved and it literally takes minutes. Wellness Mama has a basic recipe with lots of variations listed at the bottom. Print label here.
Homemade Spice Rub Gift
If you have a chef on your list, they will appreciate a pre-made spice rub. Save and thoroughly wash old spice containers or purchase here.
My favorite place to order bulk spices is Mountain Rose Herbs. You do have to pay shipping, but I love supporting an ethical company.
