Homemade Hand Lotion Recipe

Lotion Tin with lavender twig

This is the homemade hand lotion recipe I have been making for over 15 years. I have tried others, but also go back to this original recipe.

It is beneficial if the whole family uses it because children build connections through their senses.  Read more about that in my article on helping kids transition.

You can sometimes find tin containers at the dollar store or save and recycle small jars.

We also use it for Christmas gifts for relatives or teachers. When we mix it up and try new homemade gifts, our relatives ask for it!

Wrapped Present - Homemade Hand Lotion Recipe

Troubleshooting – I once had someone mention that they found small hard pieces in their lotion. This was because I had not been patient enough in melting the beeswax. If this happens, just return the mixture to the double boiler, re-melt, and whip again.

Homemade Hand Lotion

Our whole family uses this lotion, even the men! We use it on our hands and lips. Feel free to use any carrier oil. I tend to use other organic olive oil we use for cooking.
This lotion keeps well. If you do find it gets too soft, just place it in the refrigerator.

Equipment

  • Kitchen scale
  • Hand Mixer
  • Glass bowl dedicated for lotion (one that will fit on a saucepan snugly and allow you to stir)

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • ½ cup carrier oil (olive oil, almond oil, etc)
  • ¼ cup coconut oil
  • 2 oz beeswax pellets
  • 4 tsp shea butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract OR 20-30 drops of essential oil like lavender (Feel free to experiment with your favorite natural scents.)

Instructions

Instructions

  • Place carrier oil, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter in a glass bowl. Fill the saucepan with enough water to barely touch the bottom of the bowl when it is placed on top. (You are essentially making a double boiler.)
  • Over medium heat periodically stir the ingredients until melted and you do not see any beeswax pellets.
  • Remove from heat and add the desired fragrance.
  • Place in the refrigerator until slightly hardened.
  • If you desire smooth lotion, this step is necessary. Carefully mix with hand mixer until smooth.
  • Transfer to containers.

Notes

If you are making it for gifts, double the recipe. Typically, if I am going through the effort of making it, I usually double it. If it is too much, you can store it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
